Sunday 31 March 2013

Sunday 31st March 2013

Today was the Swanswater Cygnets Junior Angling Clubs second day of fishing for 2013. It was very cold this morning with some ice on the Mill Pond, however, with the  bright sun and the aerator working on the Mill Pond the ice soon started to disappear.

There was a slight change to the session today. In order to allow the last part of ice to disappear on the Mill Pond it was agreed to give the Cygnets time on the grass with level 2 Coach Thomas Anderson, demonstrating the Roll Cast and giving the Cygnets the opportunity to learn how to do this basic and fundamental cast. This was also a good opportunity to address any faults in doing this cast amongst the Cygnets who have already learnt the cast.  The roll cast is a good technique for all the Cygnets to learn, for getting the line out onto the water prior to commencing the overhead cast, to get the line on to the surface of the water if you using an intermediate or sinking line or as a cast itself when there are bushes or trees behind you and there is no room for an overhead back cast.

"Cygnets fishing on Mill Pond"

It was a sunny day with a light breeze initially, but bitterly cold at times throughout the session. There were 9 Cygnets at the session today. They were keen to start fishing, with Cameron Smith hooking the first fish within a few casts followed by his second of the day a short time later at the bottom area of the Mill Pond. Shortly after Eddie McKillop and Alasdair Anderson both hooked into fish on the upper area of the Mill Pond

"Cygnets gets Instruction from Level 2 Coach"

Thomas Anderson, level 2 Coach went around the Mill Pond throughout the session giving advice and instruction on any casting faults. There were a few fishing showing around the pond, most of the fish that were hooked seemed to be around the bottom area of the pond, these fish taking lures such as the Cats Whisker, Yellow Dancer and stalking bugs such as the Ricky Special.

"Fish on"

"Fish safely in the net"

The Cygnets have been encouraged to learn not only how to play the fish but also how to net the fish themselves - the waterside assistants and coaches were on hand to assist and guide the Cygnets on how to play the fish and safely bring it to the net.

The Successful Cygnets today were:-

Alasdair Anderson   2 fish & 4 fish returned
Cameron Smith   2 fish & 1 returned
Eddie McKillop   2 fish & 1 returned
Robert Fyfe   1 fish
Robert Hiddleston  1 fish
Abbie Hutton   1 fish

"Happy Cygnets"

The Cygnets were told today what competition team they have been placed in. The "A" team (experienced) Cygnets go to other fisheries on outings and the "B" team (less experienced) Cygnets stay at Swanswater for their outings. The outings count towards the "A" & "B" team competitions. A list will be put up in the fishery so that Cygnets can see which team they have been allocated to for outings.  Dates and venues ("A"Team only) for the outings will be given in due course.

After the fishing session was completed some of the Cygnets attended the fly tying class. Today Jimmy Miller, Fly Tying Instructor showed the Cygnets how to tie an "Emerger" & "Ricky Special". The Cygnets then had the opportunity to tie these patterns.
