Sunday 30th September 2012

This morning the Cygnets session commenced as usual with fly tying with Jimmy Miller. The cygnets were instructed and tied the "Claret Bumble". This can be a very productive wet fly, when fishing on a floating line when there is a wave. This pattern is a firm favourite by many competition anglers, who regularly fish the Claret Bumble as part of their team of flies.

Today was a very dull and damp day to start, with a brisk wind and heavy showers. Once the Cygnets had drawn their podiums they were eager to get started fishing on the Mill Pond.  The wind proved fishing to be impossible on one side of the pond initially this morning.

There were a few fish showing around the Mill Pond. The first fish of the session was hooked and landed by William Addison, which was a light blue trout.

The Cygnets tried lures such as the Yellow Dancer to nymphs such as the PTN to buzzers this morning. However the fish were reluctant to take these flies. However, some of the Cygnets managed to take fish.

The successful Cygnets this morning were:-

Alasdair Anderson   2 fish

Eddie McKillop   1 fish

William Addison 1 fish

Cameron Smith   1 fish

Mathew Beattie  1 fish

The next Cygnets session on Sunday 14th September 2012, will be an outing for the "A" Team to fish the main Swanswater.
Mr Rab Hiddleston has kindly and generously booked with the fishery, 2 boats to be made available to be used by the "A" team Cygnets on Swanswater.  The Cygnets will each have the opportunity to fish from a boat accompanied by and under supervison of a Waterside Assistant /Coach.

The "B" team will be fishing on the Mill Pond.

Sunday 16th September 2012

Following the fly tying and the rods being setup, Cygnets casting instructor Thomas Anderson gave the safety brief, followed by the Cygnets drawing their starting podiums.  It was a dry start with drizzle at times to sunny spells to heavy showers and bright spells. There was a brisk wind which was very gusty at times which made casting difficult on parts of the Mill Pond.

"Fishing on the Mill Pond"

There were plenty of fish showing around the Mill Pond throughout the session. The Golden trout were showing especially around the bottom area of the pond.  The Golden trout gave the Cygnets a challenges to catch.  However, they were very reluctant to take any of the flies offered by the Cygnets.  The Golden trout gave the Cygnets an opportunity to practise their casting accuracy and distance, when targeting the fish.

Cygnets casting instructor Thomas Anderson spent time with all the Cygnets on a one to one basis throughtout the session, giving each Cygnet advice on casting and identifying and rectifying any errors in their casting techniques. Overall, it was very clear that the Cygnets were casting very well.

The sucessful cygnets today were:-

Alasdair Anderson     2 fish
Colin Russell    1 fish
Cameron Smith    1 fish

Reminder

Remember to bring with you:-

(Apart from rod, reel & line, leader material flies and net)

Cygnets baseball cap

Glasses (i.e Sunglasses for eye protection)

Warm clothing including waterproof jacket, gloves

Wellington boots or sturdy footwear

The weather can be unpredictable, it might be sunny but it can rain or turn very cold quickly. If the wind strengthens this will make what looks a warm day into a very cold day. It is very easy to remove a layer (take a jumper off) if you become too warm. Wear plenty of layers as this is the best way to keep you warm.

We are all looking forward to seeing you all this Sunday 16th September. Cygnets will be at the usual time.
